Search Engine Keywords

Target the wrong Search Engine Keywords and everything else you do with your website is a waste of time.

Search Engine Keywords

That’s right! I’m sorry if that sounds a little harsh, but it’s absoulty true. And most people get it all wrong. That’s because there are two prospectives from which you can choose your search engine keywords.

  1. That of a website owner with a solution
  2. That of a web surfer with a problem

Most website owners develop their search engine keywords list from their own perspective, that of a person with a solution to some kind of problem or a service to meet a need.  But that is not going to work because people don’t search for things based on solutions, they search for things based on their problems.

Allow me to explain… (forgive me for such a over simpleminded example)  Let’s say you are a landscaper and you specialize in in the repair of storm damage such as floods or land sildes. You have all the things needed to do your specialized type of work such as:

  • Cat 5 bulldozer with special attachments for muddy work.
  • Landscaping licenses with the sate and city
  • Referrals and customer testimonials

You get the idea… And these are things you want to emphasize on your website and use as your  search engine keyword phrases. These are all great search engine keyword phrases from the prospective of someone with a solution. But these will be mostly ineffective because your potential customers are not looking for solutions in that sense. They are searching based on their problems, not your solutions.

So what is needed is a set of  search engine keywords based on your potential customers problems such as…

  • mud slide
  • flood damage
  • land slide
  • water damage

You get the idea. So when you go to develop your  search engine keyword list you need to step into the shoes of your customer and then think about their problems and how they would go about searching for solutions.
