Design Enhancements

WordPress 3.0 provides several major enhancements in the form of form of APIs that allows you to make changes to your blog that would otherwise only be possible for programmers. In other words it will be easy to tweak your blog. Things like custom background, headers and menus and custom post types. There is also a new default theme called Twenty Ten that was designed to illustrates the new API features.

Improved Usability

You will find a new and lighter user interface combined with contextual help on every screen making the overall blog experience easier and more enjoyable.

Greater Flexibility

Technically inclined people such as webmasters and developers will undoubtedly be pleased to find the merger of WordPress MU (the multi user version) and the regular WordPress is now seamless. With the problems of compatibility behind us developers can return to the art of creating the future and forget about fixing the past. And if all that is not enough, add 1,217 bug fixes and feature enhancements. I think you will be pleased with WordPress 3.0.

WordPress 3.0

WordPress MU or the multi user version of the popular blog application so many of us have come to love was not a simple application to say the least. Well WordPress MU is a thing of the past now that the new WordPress 3.0 is out of Beta testing and ready for the big time. That is because the new version of WordPress incorporates the functionality of of WordPress MU. It’s still not a simple task to setup a multi user version of of WordPress, but it better than than it used to be.

WordPress 3.0 Install Issues

The installation of WordPress 3.0 is as smooth as the previous version of WordPress. But it does not install the multi user features either. While it may not be as complicated to get the full multi user version up and running as it was with MU, it’s still a little confusing at best and if you have never worked with the MU version of WordPress, you are going to need some help. The documentation is scarce and even when you find the instruction on how to proceed, you will likely need to do a little research on your own to understand how to configure WordPress to work with sub-domains. Or just stick with me for a few more minutes as we go over the steps in this article.

Getting Started with WordPress 3.0

So let’s start at the beginning. You have a web hosting account that supports PHP, MySQL and you’re comfortable with an FTP client or a web based file manager. That’s a good start. If you are starting to worry already, hang in there and we’ll do our best to pull you through this with as little pain as possible. And rest assured, the good folks that develop WordPress are highly skilled individuals and have made simple the process of installing a highly advanced application on a very complex computer system known as a web server.

First, go to http://wordpress.org/ and download the WordPress 3.0 setup file. You will have two choices, a relatively failure compressed .zip file and a not so failure .tar.gz file. If you’re not sure, don’t give it another thought. Download the .zip file and save it someplace where you will be able to find it.

Transfer WordPress 3.0 Install Files

If you are going to use an FTP client and you are not going to install WordPress in your root directory, unzip the file and upload the files with the directory structure intact. You can change or rename the directory you install WordPress in as you see fit. If you are going to install in your root directory and upload the files with a web based file manager, you will want to extract the files into a directory and then zip them without the wordpress directory within the zip file. That way you can upload the entire install file and unzip it right into your root directory (public_html or www) on your web server. In most cases you will not need to change any file permissions or edit configuration any files.

The WordPress 3.0 Database

Next you will want to create a MySQL database, setup a user account and provide the user account complete access to the MySQL database. If you are working with Cpanel as your website control panel, find the MySQL Database Wizard and start it up. Call your database something simple like ‘wp’ and create a user account and password. Then you will have the option to assign the user account to the database and set your level of access to the database. Give the user account full access to everything.

User and Database Name Issues

Pay attention here as this is where most problems people have setting up WordPress arise. The MySQL database Wizard will use the user name you provide, but will append the website control panel user account name to front of both the database name and use MySQL user account name. So if your website control panel user name is ‘robert’ and you created a MySQL user account named ‘admin’ your MySQL database user name might end up being something like robert_admin and if you created a MySQL database called ‘wp’ it might end up something like ‘robert_wp’.

Start the WordPress 3.0 Setup

Once you finish all that, fire up your web browser and point it to the location you uploaded your WordPress application files. If you get it right the WordPress Install should come up and prompt you to continue. The setup will ask you a question or two make you click to continue and then ask you to create your WordPress user account and password and your done with the WordPress setup.

Personalize WordPress 3.0

We will continue this discussion and go over the steps needed to personalize your WordPress blog. We’ll make some changes to the default configuration to improve search engine optimization. Walk you through the process of finding, installing and activation new themes, plug-ins and widgets. We’ll go over many of the features that help make WordPress a fun and easy to use alternative to the complicated old fashion websites of the past.

What Makes WordPress 3.0 Special

And while we are here, we’ll look at some of the exciting new technologies that are changing the way people communicate and interact with the people we know. And just to be safe, we will go over the risks and challenges of entering cyberspace.

The Future Of WordPress 3.0

Finally we will go over the setup and configure the advanced multi user functions inherited from WordPress MU and the opportunities personal blog networks present, opportunities we can hardly imagine.

Statistics reveal that WordPress is the most widely used blogging platform. The reasons of its wide usage which are in plenty. Apart from the various constraints, restrictions and ease-of-use issues on other platforms, the money prospect keeps everyone interested!

Making money online is still a dream for a lot of internet sapiens, most of them are not even close to the correct way of doing things. We at ProfitBlogger laid out an interesting programme, featuring several suggestions and advices about the probable ways to earn money through affiliate marketing programs.

The art of making building relationships

The reasons why WordPress empowers a huge potential to become a money minting machine if used effectively are in plenty. The presence of numerous plugins allow almost anything one can think of while playing with a blog layout, configuration, features, etc. Effective use of plugins have resulted in some of the best CMS based on WordPress. It is pretty much evident that world’s top blogs mostly run on WordPress.

The other advantage that WordPress users have is the flexibility in design as compared to other platforms. As, BlogForProfit writes,

Instead of having to settle for a web yellow page, where you throw something up and pray someone will stop by. You get a site that is interactive and proactive. A site where you can build relationships with your visitors and turn them into return visitors and readers.

Talking about ways to make money using blogs, I would lay out 3 basic techniques to get things done;

Google Adsense is one of the most easiest methods of drawing money from a high traffic blog. Getting your blog traffic is another important step, on which we have talked a lot many times and will continue to do that! For a quick step, choosing a few high rank keywords, catering to their usage and thus enabling you to come up in the top searches of google will help more traffic onto your blog page. The probability of making money through adsense if directly proportional to the number of people coming onto your blog. It is indeed a long term, stable income technique and most bloggers use it to pay off their bills!

If you’re not a very established blogger but have a confidence in your writing, getting registered with good blogs by contacting their owners, who have a pay-per-post strategy is also a pretty decent way to make a start. This shall leverage you name and money, both. A slow but steady way of making money for good amateurs.

Affiliate Marketing Programs are the most fruitful of all the methods used by people on the internet to earn money. Though the technique appears to be complex to most amateur bloggers and does involve a good monitoring of the traffic and conversion rates, deals, etc., people who know how to use it efficiently make millions. There are a lot of blogs which run only on affiliate marketing.

In the times of recession, when people are talking about the benefits of blogging and online business, internet marketing strategies and newer business models will definitely help WordPress bloggers earn money and involve themselves into profitblogging!
